It has captivated thousands of fans around the globe over the past decade, now it has finally made it way to Singapore! Arguably the most intriguing of creativity contests around, the Red Bull Art of Can Singapore will mark the first time that the immensely popular pop art event is held in the Asia Pacific region.

The competition is open to artists, students, grandparents and all of those in-between are invited to participate, although the competition is expected to attract more creative types of all ages and occupations.

Flying in the face of traditional art media, contestants taking part in this unique contest have to abide by

only one single rule ..they need to incorporate the famous blue and silver Red Bull cans from the

Austrian Energy Drink giant along with some inspiration and a lot of imagination to conceive and produce

an original work art. The final artwork could be anything from a sculpture, to a collage, jewellery, furniture,

fashion accessory or interactive art!

In other words, they have a free reign to let their creativity run wild, as there are no constraints with the

Red Bull Art of Can contest other than the limits of one’s imagination.

All that is asked is the Red Bull can be the focus of the art work. It’s just that simple!

ART OF CAN EXHIBITION

The event will culminate in a 10-day exhibition to be held at the brand new *SCAPE building just off

Orchard Road, and is expected to showcase a wide variety of art made from recycled materials. It would

be really interesting and fascinating to see what the best creative minds in Singapore can come up with

this year. Past Red Bull Art of Can events have seen innovative exhibits like a 14-foot bull, an 8-foot

octopus and even a Mona Lisa replica portrait pieced together completely using the blue and silver cans!

The number of Red Bull cans used for the art pieces over the years ranged from one to an astounding

4,000!

For the Singapore event, an estimated 30-50 pieces are expected to be selected for the final exhibit

collection at *SCAPE, which will take place between 2-11 July 2010. The official private opening on 2

July will be a by-invite-only event with a guest list that is expected to feature the who’s who in the local

arts scene, all participants, event partners and friends of Red Bull. There will also be an official after party

at Zouk, which is the official night spot for the Red Bull Art of Can Singapore 2010.

THE EXPERT OPINION

As with any major art competitions, a distinguished judging panel will be put together to help sort through

the array of submissions and determine which pieces will eventually earn a coveted pedestal in the final

exhibition. The judges..decision will be based on the overall creativity, execution and construction of each

piece. The final line-up of judges will be announced shortly but are expected to include authorities in the

local art scene and creative industry.

PRIZES

The judges will award special honors to the top three artists/pieces, including the grand prize of a trip for

two to Berlin, Germany, one of the world.s leading art cities. Second place winner receives a weekend

trip for two to Melbourne, Australia.s premier city for arts and culture, while third place takes home a

Canon DSLR camera. The three winners will be announced during the private opening on 2 July.

Ok, it’s time to get something going!

FLESH IMP X FIXIE PIXIE Shoot @ F1 Pit Building Turn 2 and 3.

The sun was in its full glory when we hit the ashpalt at the F1 pit building.
6 riders from different walks of life, representing varying communities, bringing with them their interesting take on riding fixed, combined with our explosive photog, you could almost hear the sizzling in the air, baked with thick anticipation.

With the smell of burning rubber, determined speedster and precarious turns and jumps, we are almost there in line with the full F1 experience; except that we were all on our fixies and all geared up for the shoot that was to take place.

Hurtling into the pit was the Red Bull Defender, standing by to provide ‘wiiinnngs’ for those in need!

Our beloved Hong Kong Fixie Fiend, Fixie Pixie aka Calvin Che was in town for the shoot, and we were all stoked that he could make it and we had a great time catching up with him.

It has been close to 8 years since we last spoke and the only thing that has changed is he is now more popularly known as Fixie Pixie.

Doing a little tete-a-tete on the direction of the shoot, while Haiqal from NookMag looking out for some serious behind-the-scenes photo-ops.

Once everyone arrived, it’s time to get started!

Chris from TR bikes was the first to be shot, and looking at the jumps he is doing, it seems age is not a factor for this avid extreme sports enthusiast.

The banks look pretty steep to do this, but Chris took a glance and said : ” Let’s do this!”

As Chris has to make sure that the fixie heads get their daily fix at TR, we did the group shot first.
Naturally, the flyer has to be in the picture.

Bum getting the guys prepped for the group shot.

We tried different angles and poses, and yes, the sun is not helpful. :(

Next up, familiar faces Darryl and Aaron J from the Blue and Silver Camp in the form of Red Bull!

While relatively new to the Fixie scene, Darryl is no stranger to bikes as he owns both a roadie and has been riding for some 5 years now.

Now, fixated on his fixie, he gets going with his sprints and trains up for long trips that he does once a week!

Aaron J livin’ large on his DC PK Ripper

In case you are wondering what we were doing here, this was me trying to get hold of Aaron during an out-take while he protects his modesty.

Nas from Peonfx

One of the East Side boys (no, not a boyband) we rode together regularly weekday nights and it always amazes me how this guy can pop, jump, wheelie and do some serious tricking at the snap of the fingers. Or like I always say, at the press of the button.

Here’s how he is doing it again!

and of course our good friend Leon from Monster Fixie

We saved the best for the last with Calvin throwing his moves like no other.

Bum busted Nas back tube and the impact left the tyre with a matching hole to boot.

We shall call this the Bum Bunny Bust (BBB)

Special shouts to Bum for his fantastic shots.
Ingenious use of lighting and making the riders looking badass awesome seems to be his forte!

Thank you all for making this shoot possible! Props to Calvin @ Fixie Pixie, Darryl and Aaron @ Red Bull, Chris @ TR Bikes, Nas @ Peonfx, Leon @ Monster Fixies, and of course our talented rider photog Bum @ CAS for those awesome shots!
Special Thanks to Sim Cik and Haiqal @ Nook Mag for the exclusive behind the scene shots!

For more photos, you know the drill!
