As someone who’s never had a day job and having a career for 16 years,
I’d advise those of U who aspire to be a full time musician or have a
dream of making a hobby/passion of yours into a career.
Always remember that talent is EVERYWHERE all over the world, many people
can sing, can play guitar, can arrange music, can write songs, can blah
blah blah. U think you’re great? I ASSURE you, there’s that kid out there
10 years younger than you somewhere out there who can knock your socks
off.
Work attitude is at most times even way more important than your talent.
If talent is the only shit that matters, then those who were way better
than me when I 1st started would not have given up along the way feeling
jaded and going back to doing some other job that they have no passion
for.
Whether it’s obviously your big break, a small gig, or even a rehearsal.
If U truly want to turn your passion into a career, and last long in it.
Here’s some common sense, be serious about it. The word turning pro(full
time) already hints at the word being professional. Don’t look down on
the importance of anything related to your passion because U will NEVER
know when that smallest thing might lead to something huge. There are
really many opportunities out there, yes we need talent to back it up,
however as mentioned, there’s talent everywhere. So if the way you handle
that opportunity doesn’t satisfy the needs of the client, the producer,
the manager etc. There goes that chance. Remember, it won’t affect them,
they have the other talents to choose from. How you represent and handle
yourself ultimately affects YOU, not them.
Ultimately this industry is made up of creative passionate people, so
there tends to be certain artistic tendencies that come with it. (I’m
definitely guilty of some myself)
But well, end of day, we also should be aware not every artiste gets to
make their art a career.
